November Vitality Challenge Week 1: Movement

We human beings were born to move; it’s kind of the reason we were blessed with two legs. Once upon a time, we spent our days hunting and gathering, cooking and cleaning and generally doing. Now, most of us have to schedule time for movement and give it the title “exercise” because of sedentary jobs and riding the bus/train or driving the car to work.

But, the truth is, movement is just as important for a healthy mind as it is for a healthy physique. Those who exercise are found to be more focused and perform better at work. They are happier, less stressed and cope better with life. When a challenge is making me feel anxious or agitated, I often find all I need is to get out and move. While it may not take the challenge I’m facing away, it definitely helps with how I deal with it.

“Lack of activity destroys the good condition of every human being, while movement and methodical physical exercise save it and preserve it.” – Plato

Finding time to exercise every day is a non-negotiable for me.

First thing in the morning after hydrating and wholefood-loading, I pull out the yoga mat and foam roller and take 15-20 minutes to stretch. It gets me feeling awake and alive. My brain becomes alert, my circulation gets going, my breath and lungs expand, and it aids movement in other areas as well… if you get what I mean 😉

At the end of the day, exercise should be enjoyable and something to look forward to. One small change can be all it takes to get the ball rolling and changing habits for the better. Here are some other ways you can sneak movement in.

• Park further away from the office
• Get on the bus a stop later (and off a stop earlier)
• Go for a walk and talk with a colleague during your lunch break
• Do 50 squats while you brush your teeth
• Make time for a 5-10 minute stretch before bed or first thing in the morning
• Get up and walk for 3 minutes every couple of hours
• Participate in the Yoga Tree 4-week yoga challenge!
